What the Chakra System Is
Understanding the chakra system is important in order to understand the concepts behind chakra healing. What is the chakra system? Ancient Indian yoga describes the main structure of the human energy body as six distinct centers or chakras. This also refers to different levels of consciousness and are often depicted as lotus flowers, or padmas. A seventh chakra above the head is also included (but in Indian tradition it does not belong directly to the human body).
There is an energy field around every living being which is described as an aura. Much of the color and energy in an aura is supplied by the chakras, and to those who have trained themselves to sense these, they can be described as wheels of light.
“Chakrum” in the Sanskrit means ‘wheel”. ‘Nadis’, another Sanskrit word, refers to the subtle energy conduits or lines surrounding each one of us. The places where those nadis are produced and intersect are the chakras. The “major” chakras occur where these various lines are produced and cross each other.

How the Chakra System Affects Your Health
Viewed from a holistic standpoint these energy centers are responsible for receiving and processing life force energy, and in turn disseminate this energy to the mental body, the physical body, and the spiritual body. Chakra healing is necessary when the chakra become clogged with stagnant energy. Blockages or energetic dysfunctions in the chakras will result in deficient energy flow to certain portions of the body as well as impairment in the entire energy field, thus hindering the energy field’s ability to process energy. Proper eating, thinking, physical rest, as well as appropriate energetic hygiene are therefore paramount to help keep the chakra’s functioning efficiently.
Each chakra has its own assigned characteristics and responsibilities in the energetic body. This includes its own specific color from the color spectrum, its own vibratory tone, and its own physical, mental or spiritual attributes, as well as a host of other attributes. Chakra healing techniques may combine the use of color or sound vibration to help re-balance the energy flow in the deficient or excessive chakra.

Chakra Healing: How to Cleanse & Balance Chakras
Cleansing and balancing techniques are vital in chakra healing. For chakra healing to occur the energy nadis must work efficiently. This means that they need to be cleansed and then re-balanced to establish proper energy flow.
The following method can be used for both cleansing your chakras or for clearing a partner’s:
1. Start from the root chakra and work your way up. With a hand over the root chakra (about two inches above the area) move your hand counter clockwise for about 5-6 passes. Imagine that your hand is an oversized spoon, or a large scoop. Still moving counterclockwise, visualize the spoon or scoop scraping out all stagnant prana until the chakra is clean and clear, radiating out its true color. This generally takes about two to three sets of 10 rotations. Between sets shake your hands off.
2. Repeat step one moving through all of the major chakras.
3. After the chakras have been cleared its time to rebalance them. Starting from the root chakra spin your hand counter clockwise. Visualize a blinding white light radiating from your hands into the chakra. Do this for two to three sets of 10, pausing between sets to shake off your hands.
4. Proceed through all of the chakras as described in step three.
5. Wash your hands, and take a few deep breaths.
Chakra Healing Meditation for Energizing & Aligning Chakra System
1. Sit either on the edge of a chair or on the ground with your straight.
2. Close your eye and take seven deep, slow breaths; inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Allow the muscles in your body to relax while keeping your spine straight.
3. Visualize a vibrant red circle spinning clockwise at the base of your spine. Next move up through each chakra visualizing a spinning circle in the corresponding chakra color. For example, the next chakra after the root chakra is the naval chakra is orange. Visualize a vibrant orange circle underneath the naval spinning clockwise, and so forth up to the crown chakra. Breathe slowly and deeply though the nose through the entire process.
4. After you have reached the crown chakra you should have been able to visualize each of the chakras spinning clockwise in their respective color. Keep them all spinning in your mind’s eye. Stay at tat point for about ten very slow, very deep breaths.
5. Next, while continuing to imagine your chakras spinning, visualize a blinding white beam of light coming down from the heavens and penetrating through your crown chakra, your third eye chakra, throat chakra, etc.; in a straight line exiting your root chakra and penetrating deep into the ground. Keep your spine straight during this entire process.
6. Stay in this quiet place of visualization while continuing to take slow deep breaths, and feel the white light energize you. Do this as long as you’d like.
7. To conclude the meditation simply imagine the beam of light turning off, and then imagine each chakra color turning off one-by-one.
